Dulcimer Book by Larkin Bryant Cohen List $10.98
Paperback 103pp (Riverlark Music June 1982)

I use Larkin's book/tape combination with all my beginning students. She is known for her gentle, finger-picking style and as sponsor/host for the annual Memphis Festival, but I personally think she excells in her teaching through this book!

Chord Book by Neal Hellmann List
$5.95
Paperback-60pp. (Mel Bay Nov. 1993)
Dimensions (in inches): .25 x 12 x 4.5
This is the book that let the scales fall from my eyes and helped me to finally understand the modal music of the mountain dulcimer! Complete chords for all 7 of the traditional modes, as well as detailed and informative essays about the traditions of the modes. A Bonus: chords for "Jazz" tuning (DAAd); also Sized to fit in your case! I'd consider this a necessity for every player.
Chord
Encyclopedia by James Major List
$10.95
Spiralbound-139 pp. (Mel Bay Nov 1982)
Dimensions (in inches): 0.5
x 12 x 11.75
The most complete Dulcimer chord book I've seen! 3 different sets of tunings for 6 of the 7 traditional modes: e.g. Mixolydian (DAdd; GDgg; CGcc); Ionian (GGcc; DAaa; GDdd). Multiple positions and fingerings for nearly every chord. Since the book was first published, the accepted way of describing chords from Bass to melody strings has changed from Right to Left to the current Left to Right. However, the chord diagrams remove any doubts or questions. A reliable reference for building your arrangements and playing more complex tunes, and with other instruments.

Teaching Mountain Dulcimer in a Classroom with Young Students:
Classroom
Dulcimer by Lois Hornbostel List
$12.95
Spiralbound -64 pp. (Backyard Music, July 1991)
Lois is a well-respected teacher who has equipped many, many young students to play "their" music on dulcimers, often constructed from cardboard (Look for "Backyard Dulcimers"). This collection is aimed at these students and shares her techniques, as well as the 22 songs in 3 tunings (DAA, DAc & DAd). Included are Rock & Roll riffs and suggestions for left-handed players. This has definitely helped me in reaching and teaching young people.

Fireside; ISBN: 068483877X ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.51 x 7.48

I first borrowed a copy from a friend, and then had to have my own! Sudo applies some very basic Zen (Buddhist) concepts to the performance and practice of music. Each chapter is short, Zen "koan" style, easy to rush through, but better if savored.
Celebration
of Life by Jean Ritchie
Paperback 128 pp Music
Sales Corp, (Reprint June 1997) $11.95
Over 75 Songs, plus poems & photographs of Jean Ritchie and her nom de plumes (e.g.'Than Hall). This was one of my first companions in my mountain dulcimer journey, a sip from such a deep well of tradition that is still being shaped by the hands that pass it on. Her poem "Celebration of Life" inspired my song: "I Celebrate life!", the title of a forthcoming collection of my original tunes, for which Jean has granted permission to include her poem! This is a true appalachian treasure.
