While serving as an innercity pastor of a cross-cultural congregation in Kansas City, Missouri, I recognized the power of Music as an organizing tool to bring people of diverse backgrounds and experiences together in one community. We sought intentionally to celebrate and Worship with both cultural and theological integrity. Owl Mountain Music was formed in 1991 when I produced our congregation's worshipbook (The Fountain of Hope Lutheran Fellowship Songbook, in its 4th printing) to help us gather some of the of the musical resources that aided us, as well as the new music created in the context of our community. You'll find other RESOURCES like that on the PRODUCTS page.
One of the gifts of the Lutheran Theological/Worship tradition is to insist that Worship and Music be in the language of the people. We stands within a living tradition that constantly engages us in community re-shaping dialogue.
Worship Music
"Gathering a community from the diverse people of Kansas City's eastside neighborhood has been an exercise in hope. Hoping in the midst of despair, trusting that which we do not yet see, acting "as if," searching diligently for and finding God's surprising presence. Music is a vital organizing tool for this process. We have sought regularly to celebrate by using songs and hymns from the traditions of the gathered people, as well as creating new music and worship forms--weaving our own rich worship tradition which gives a witness with both cultural and theological integrity."
--From the Introduction to the 4th printing of the Fountain of Hope Lutheran Fellowship Songbook.
"The writer of Colossians 3:17-18 encourages the readers to strengthen their faith with the singing of "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs", the Psalmist inspires us to "Sing unto the Lord a New Song." Through the prophet Isaiah, God says, "Behold, I am doing a new thing among you." New songs arise when folks have a need, are hard pressed, or simply need to find a voice to express what God is teaching them through the circumstances of their lives."
